My Aching Belly!!!

Updated: Aug 3, 2019

We've all been there!! An upset stomach is the absolute worst! The nausea, diarrhea, rumbling, just downright sick feeling is not on anyone's list of fun things to do. Especially when it is chronic and never seems to go away. The thing to remember when you are going through stomach upset, is that this is a symptom of something going on in your body. The key is figuring out the root cause and fixing the deeper issue. Rather than just covering the symptoms up with medications, which have their own laundry list of side effects.

Here Is Some Insight Into The Gut And How It Operates:

The gut mircrobiota (most people know as gut flora), is the name that is used today to describe the population of microbes that live in our guts. There are tens of trillions of these microorganisms living inside our guts at any given moment. Including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes that make up our gut microbiota. In total the gut microbiota can weigh up to 2kg, which is the equivalent to almost 4.5 pounds!! A whopping two thirds of our microbiota is specific to each of us as individuals, with only one third of our microbiota being common in other people. Because of this, the microbiota in our guts is like an individual identity card. It is specific to each of us. No gut microbiota is alike.

Some Of The Functions Of Our Gut Microbiota Are:

  • It helps digest foods that the stomach and small intestine may not have been able to digest.

  • It helps to produce Vitamins B and K.

  • It creates an important “barrier effect” that protects our immune system.

  • It helps combat against the “bad” microorganisms. Which helps maintain wholeness in the intestinal mucosa.

  • A healthy gut microbiota is the key to proper digestive function.

Our gut microbiota starts to evolve right after we are born. And it will continue to develop throughout our lives. As we age it will change with each exposure to our environment, lifestyle and different foods we consume. This is why eating healthy and leading a healthy life is so important to the health of our gut.

A Healthy Immune System Starts With Our Gut

Our gut microbiota is home to about 70% of our immune system. If we are constantly sick, the first place to start the healing process, is our guts. Gut health is one of the key components to getting healthy. There are many ways to repair and heal our guts. One of the most common things you will hear is how probiotics are important to gut health. Which is true. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many factors that play into achieving a healthy gut.

Some Of The Most Common Symptoms Of Poor Gut Health Are:

  • Chronic diarrhea, constipation, gas or bloating

  • Nutritional deficiencies

  • Depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD

  • Poor immune system

  • Headaches, brain fog, memory loss

  • Excessive fatigue

  • Skin rashes and problems such as acne, eczema or rosacea

  • Cravings for sugar or carbs

  • Arthritis or joint pain
