Healthy Salisbury Steak

Who says you cannot enjoy healthy comfort food? I'm here to tell you that you can! This is my healthy spin on a recipe I found in the Everything Gluten and Dairy Free cookbook by Audrey Roberts.

Patty Ingredients:

  • 2 Lbs Grass Fed Ground Beef

  • 1/2 Cup Gluten Free Bread Crumbs

  • 2 Lg Free Range Eggs

  • 2 T. Worcestershire Sauce

  • 2 tsp. Organic Onion Powder

  • 1 tsp. Organic Garlic Powder

  • 1/2 tsp. Redmonds Salt

  • 1/2 tsp. Ground Black Pepper

  • 4 T. Avocado Oil

  • 4 T. Grass Fed Butter

  • 2 T. Organic Garlic (minced)

  • 3 cups Organic White Button Mushrooms (sliced)

  • 2 small Organic Sweet Onions (peeled and diced)

Gravy Ingredients:

  • 2 T. Cornstarch

  • 4 T. Filtered Water

  • 4 C. Organic, Gluten Free Beef Broth

  • 4 T. Organic Ketchup

  • 4 T. Worcestershire Sauce

Method:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together grass fed beef, bread crumbs, egg, worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Shape into eight oval patties.

  2. Heat the avocado oil in an extra large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 5-6 minutes on each side and then remove from the skillet.

  3. Add grass fed butter, garlic, mushrooms, and onions to the skillet and cook for 5-10 minutes until onions are golden and mushrooms are softened.

  4. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with the cold water. Add the beef broth, ketchup, worcestershire sauce, and the cornstarch mixture to the skillet. Whisk until smooth.

  5. Reduce heat to medium, stirring often and simmer for 3-4 minutes until the gravy starts to thicken. Add patties back into the skillet and cook for 5 more minutes or until completely cooked through.

  6. I serve this with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • I make this meal completely gluten free. But it can also be made dairy free by swapping out the real butter for a dairy free alternative.

  • As always, be mindful of all ingredients used when preparing meals. The cleaner the ingredients are, the healthier the meal will be.
